Many people underestimate the importance of good posture. While you may think there is nothing you can do to improve in this area, if you follow some basic tips you will find yourself making progress in no time at all.

Below are 10 tips for improving your posture, which will in turn improve your overall level of health:

1. Imagine your body is being held up by a string.

With this in mind, you will always remember that your head and spine should be aligned at all times.

2. Focus on your posture when sitting and standing.

Some people think that good posture is only a consideration when standing. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is every bit as important when sitting, especially if you are in a chair everyday for an extended period of tie.

3. Remind yourself to check your posture throughout the day.

When you first attempt to improve your posture you may find yourself forgetting, and once again slouching. Set reminders, such as at every meal, to check your posture.

4. Get a back massage.

If you have bad posture, there is a good chance that your joints have hardened. With regular massages you will find yourself feeling better, not to mention the fact that improving your posture will be easier than ever before.

5. Eliminate bad habits that lead to poor posture.

Are you always walking hunched over? Do you watch television in dim lighting, causing you to lean over? Cut these things from your life and you will find yourself improving.

6. Buy a high quality chair.

There is nothing worse for your posture than sitting in an old, beat up chair for an extended period of time. If your employer is not willing to upgrade your chair, it may be time to make a change on your own.

7. Use a back cushion.

This is a simple change that can help you make big progress in this department. It only takes a couple of dollars to purchase a back cushion that can be used while you sit at your desk.

8. Don’t carry heavy items.

Believe it or not, simply carrying heavy items can lead to poor posture. This holds true regardless of age, so try to avoid this.

9. Strengthen your back through the proper exercises.

This can include yoga, Pilates, free weights, and basic stretching.

10. See your doctor.

If all else fails, you may want to speak with your primary care physician about your posture. You may be referred to a physical therapist or chiropractor for a more in depth assessment of your situation.

When you improve your posture your entire body will begin to feel better. Along with this, you will be able to stand tall at all times.

With the 10 tips above, you will soon find yourself on the right track to making a positive change. Even if you only implement a couple of these tips, you will likely find yourself making progress and achieving your goal.
